ENGLISH CONVERSATION

THE BLOOMSBURY GROUP WITH VIRGINIA WOOLF Thursday, February 4th Students from the sixth form (major in electronics) went to the museum of Art and Industry 'La Piscine' in Roubaix to follow a guided tour of a major exhibition devoted to the Bloomsbury group. They spent over an hour and a half discovering what this group of artists and intellectuals had been involved in. Among the principal figures of this group were Virginia Woolf (a writer), Vanessa Bell (a painter/ Virginia's sister), Roger Fry (both a painter and an art critic) and Duncan Grant (a painter). The guide, Alexandre, led the students to discover how innovative painters such as Roger Fry, Duncan Grant or Vanessa Bell were. He gradually led them to understand what post-impressionism was in referring to colour contrasts, outlines or the hatching technique. By observing one of Picasso's painting, they also found out what cubism consisted in. They were also asked to draw and colour the face of one of their fellow-student, using cold (green) or warm (red) colours to give the impression of volume. The students, Mme Dupuys (Jean Rostand's librarian) and Melle Claisse (their English teacher) really enjoyed the visit and would like to thank the museum and its staff to offer such a quality exhibition. On Friday 5th February, two other groups (from 1ère SI and 1ère SVT) went to see the same exhibition and followed the same guided tour. They were accompanied by Mme Roelens (a French teacher), Mme Shimamungu (an English teacher) and Melle Claisse (an English teacher).
